Colleagues,
MVP: Please read this one – it might be the most important email I have written. Ever. There is a friend I love dearly but who is consistently pointing the finger at others. Everything is someone else’s fault; everyone else needs to do better. The blame always lies elsewhere. Of course, this makes for a tough life at so many levels:
I have been rehearsing in my head the conversation I need to have with this person. The thing I most want to say is, “Stop judging others! Everyone is doing the best they can. When you stop judging them, your relationships will improve, and you will be happier.” And as I rehearse, it hits me. They are doing the best they can. If I stop judging them, my relationship with them will improve. And I will be happier. And maybe so will they. It is so much easier to preach something than to live it. Today’s intention: Look for your own hypocrisy. Listen to your own advice. Cheers! Frederick

Colleagues,
MVP: It’s hard to provide people with good strategies if we don’t know what they are trying to achieve. In the middle of class, a student stands up and walks out of the room, without permission. Why did they do that? If we don’t know the why, it’s difficult to come up with a strategy to help the student make better decisions. Today’s intention: Just ask why. Cheers! Frederick Colleagues, MVP: Data can tell a story, or obscure it. The data doesn’t lie. Or does it? Below is an image of the all-time downloads by month for The Assistant Principal Podcast. Looks like we are headed in the wrong direction, doesn’t it? But there are several problems with the numbers:
As I put this post together, I also noticed how months vary between 4 and 5 episodes, which “should” make some months significantly different from others, but if a new episode falls one or two days before a new month, many of that episode’s downloads will bleed into the next month. Colleagues, in a culture obsessed with numbers, it is worth remembering… Numbers can tell you what, but not why. And without why, the what may be meaningless. Today’s intention: What numbers drive your decisions? Should they? Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: Count your blessings today and don’t take anything for granted. Today Mara and I are celebrating episode 200 of The Assistant Principal Podcast! So today I am counting my blessings:
And I am (trying) to not take anything for granted. It isn’t another bullet list, it is realizing that everything above is fleeting. I wish I had been better at being fully present earlier in my life, but I am thankful to be better now. I hope maybe I can help you stay grounded a bit more than I was. If you feel inspired, use this link to email Mara and I to share something you like about the podcast. Today’s episode of The Assistant Principal Podcast is sponsored by IXL! Cheers! Frederick Colleagues,
MVP: Small is good Pay attention to the small things. Why? In a culture obsessed with big, bold, and loud, it is all too easy to overlook the small things. And yet, it is the small things that have immediate impact. Cheers! Frederick |
